The inspiration for this picture came from a railway bridge on the Calden Canal. I did not take a photograph, so it is painted very much from the impression in my memory rather than factual details. On the real thing there is a lock just through the bridge hole, and I expect the whole scene is actually totally different. There must have been many similar scenes all over the canal system. I hope you will feel I captured the feeling of the tiny industrial locomotive hauling coal wagons, passing over a Willow Wren motor.
I found it difficult to get the perspective correct, so in the end I made a model of it using a Pug loco and narrow boat from my model railway and drew initials sketches from that.
