Winter on the Grand Union Canal.

Winter on the canal can be very harsh. The Winter of 1962/63 was exceptional bad. The ice round our boat was 18 ins thick and lasted for three months. It was that ice that finally killed off the canal traffic for it had to move to the roads for those three months and very little ever came back.

The Grand Union Canal has always been my favourite. As a teenager I used to cycle to the locks between Watford and Rickmansworth to help open the gates for the boatman. In those days the locks were fitted with gate paddles which filled the locks incredibly quickly with a very satisfying roar of moving water.

Moving water is very difficult to capture in a watercolour, but I was determined to have a go. This was my first attempt, followed by quite a few waterfalls.
